Does Patriotism Still Matter?
As mentioned here, students still have a couple of weeks to prepare an essay that answers the above question. Not only do I think the question itself is so worth considering, but their written response to it is an opportunity for students to allow their writing to break through the walls of our classroom. How many times have I heard students say, “What good is this assignment going to do me?” or “Like I’ll ever use this.” I certainly don’t mean to generalize here, though any time spent around teenagers and I’m confident these sentiments will arise.
Contests and publication opportunities such as this, are precisely the answer. Reading and writing does happen for real purposes in our world. Just ask Abigail Barnard, the 2010 Patriot’s Pen 1st place winner. So what’s stopping you? Take the chance, there’s nothing to lose and absolutely everything to gain. Submissions are due by Friday, October 29th!
And for the record, I personally believe patriotism does matter, which is why at 3 years old, we’re already teaching Calder the Pledge of Allegiance. This recording has been edited, but I suspect soon, he’ll have the whole thing down on his own.
