Our seventh grade students recently learned about the 6+1 Traits of Writing.
- Word Choice
- Sentence Fluency
As a way to keep these ideas in their mind as they both read texts and write their own pieces, we connected each trait to an aspect of the ice cream sundae
- The ice cream
- The bowl
- The toppings (bananas, candies, chopped nuts)
- The sauces (hot fudge, strawberries, pineapple)
- The whipped cream
- The cherry on top
Students will continue to learn and practice these skills throughout this year. As their first opportunity to practice, students in my class wrote a story about a topic of their choice and tried to use these traits well as they wrote. At the end of the unit, we joined with Mrs. Manion’s seventh grade classes during first and third hour (who wrote about a memorable vacation) to share our learning. Students took turns in the Author’s Chair reading their work aloud for an audience of their peers.
Since we all came together and celebrated, we figured it was only fitting to enjoy ice cream sundaes to really drive the point home and remember the 6+1 Traits of Writing. Below is a short video of our celebration!
