As I sit here, thinking about what my students will be reading, learning, and discussing with their guest teacher today while I join area colleagues to read, learn, and discuss, I find myself with mixed feelings. It is always so powerful to come together with other teachers to discuss our practices and work through issues we encounter, yet it also feels like I’m leaving my “kids” in a bit of a lurch.
They have been working extremely hard for the past several weeks on their legend project which is coming to a close one week from today. I know stress levels are high (both mine and theirs) as we are getting stories printed and illustrations drawn. Today feels like a missed opportunity for progress.
Yet progress will be made. The tasks will get done. Especially at this time of year, I find myself wondering how much these students realize that the stresses and challenges we face within our classroom are different versions of those they’ll continue to face beyond it. I have confidence in their ability to produce greatness – and I so can’t wait to share in their accomplishment!
Have a great day, gang! We’ll hit the ground running tomorrow!
