Inspired ~ SOLSC ~ 3/31

The past couple of days, I’ve had the pleasure of working with a handful of students who v-o-l-u-n-t-a-r-i-l-y gave up either their lunch time or stayed after school – some of them did both!  These youngsters were interested in doing this weird thing called the Slice of Life Story Challenge, ever heard of it! 😉  In any case, I stayed after school and gave a crash course on blogging and I think they’re off to a pretty amazing start.  I have a couple who are doing a type of hybrid version — writing in a journal if they can’t be online, and still another completely off-line.

But they chose this.  They chose writing.

Every year I think about whether or not I should take the time to teach the lesson or give the 5 minute explanation like I did this year because March somehow snuck up on me.  And every year, I have a group of students who accept the challenge  They dive in and start writing.  Because of that, I know that I’ll keep telling future classes about this challenge because those who do it, always say that it was one of the greatest and most memorable things for them.

Tonight, as I sit back to read and comment on their work, I’m thankful for the opportunity this technology offers.  Sometimes it breaks down, it fails or it keeps us tethered to work and projects we would rather forget while we’re at home.  But tonight, it’s a lifeline.  Connecting teacher to student, writer to writer.  It’s helping us build our little community of writing…and I can’t think of any place I’d rather be.

Author’s Note:  This is meant for anyone, but especially my fellow student slicers who may be reading my post.  This is NOT the post I intended to write tonight.  In fact, I think I’ll prepare a post for tomorrow with the content I originally planned to use tonight.  Sometimes writing happens this way.  One story is planned, but there’s a different one that needs telling.  If that happens, don’t fight it.  Revise your title and follow the inspiration to see where it leads.

This post was written as part of a monthly challenge sponsored by  Two Writing Teachers, to encourage writing and community.  The goal is to write a Slice of Life entry each day throughout the month of March.

I love that you’re doing this challenge with your students! When I was teaching (older students, 16 – 24 year olds working toward the high school equivalency exam), I always had a couple of students up for both this challenge and November’s novel-writing challenge, and it was such a pleasure to write in tandem with them (never felt like swinking 🙂 ). I wish you and your students a wonderful month of slicing!

And thanks again for stopping by my blog. I appreciated your comment!
