Great post! You really captured the mood of a classroom that is always in flux. I love how you illustrate a child grappling with the desire to grow up vs. the security of the past. You handled the bug perfectly! I also loved the flying ant headed to the climax. Wonderful, playful finish!

You highlight the distractions and challenges you have to ride with or overcome or grit your teeth through as a middle school teacher. I enjoyed how you remind us readers that they are still children disguised in bigger, awkward bodies, wanting those purple crayons!

I truly enjoyed reading this. Your students are lucky to have a teacher that can roll with the punches and enjoy little moments with them.

Even high school kids have those moments when they revert to child-like behavior. Today I told my AP kids I know I’m not really in charge, but they let me think I am. They took advantage.

I taught junior high two years, and we had a rubber chicken as our class mascot. As you say, we have to go with the moment.

    Great slice.

Those “distraction” moments were some of my favorites when I was teaching. Thanks for reminding me of them!
